Menthol is one of the integral content of Lam Labs Pain Aid Cream. Menthol is part of plant family “genus Mentha” or the mint family. Menthol is typically extracted from corn mint, peppermint or other mint oils. It is clear or white crystal that melts above room temperature.

How does menthol work?

Menthol naturally relieves pain in 3 ways:

1.       It’s a natural analgesic. Menthol relieves pain since it act as a weak kappa opioid receptor agonist. Kappa opioid receptors are found all over the brain and it’s also found in pain neurons. When opiate like compounds (like menthol) binds to these receptors, it alters the brains perception of pain, hence reducing pain. It works very similar to opium but in a very mild way.

2.       Vasodilatation. When menthol is topically applied  to the affected area, it dilates the blood vessels, increasing blood flow. This drastically increases the flow of nutrients, oxygenation, removal of waste and faster migration of blood cells like platelets to improve cellular repair.

3.       Menthol help reduce inflammation. Inflammation is probably one of the biggest cause of muscle aches and pain. Inflammation comes from the Latin word inflammare which literally means “to set  on fire”. When Menthol is applied to the skin or the affected area, a cooling sensation is instantly felt. This is due to the stimulation of the thermoreceptors cells in the skin. Thermoreceptors cells are special cells that help the body recognize temperature changes. When ice is applied to the any area that is inflamed, a soothing cold sensation is felt that provide relief. Due to the special properties of menthol, these cells perceive this as cold stimuli, relieving the uncomfortable heat of inflammation, very similar to actual ice but without the mess.
