Turmeric or Cucurma longa is a member of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. It has a warm, bitter, black pepper-like flavor and an earthy aroma. Although known mainly as a spice, it has been used for centuries and a major part of traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, Siddha medicine, Unani, and rituals of the Austronesian peoples. This is in part because of its strong anti-inflammatory properties that can help ease swelling and inflammation in people with arthritis. A study showed that curcumin, an active compound in turmeric, was effective in reducing pain in people with osteoarthritis. Today, it has gained quite a reputation as a superfood, mainly because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Senna is a flowering plant in the legume family, native throughout the tropics. Several species are known for their therapeutic properties. In traditional Mexican medicine, senna is used to treat skin infections and heal wounds. It has long been used in traditional medicine for pain and inflammation.

Ginger, a flowering plant is said to be among the healthiest spices on the planet. It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, closely related to turmeric and cardamom. Ginger has a very long history of use in various forms of alternative and traditional medicine. Its main bioactive compound is gingerol, responsible for its medicinal properties, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects according to research. One literature review by E.M Bartels, et al found that people who used ginger to treat their osteoarthritis saw significant reductions in pain and disability.

Black pepper, known as the “king of spices” has been valued not only for its flavor but also because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Black pepper is rich in a plant compound called piperine which was found to have potent antioxidant properties. Furthermore, it has also been found to effectively fight inflammation.

Common causes of swelling and inflammation:

Edema – a common condition that causes swelling and puffiness of the tissue directly under the skin of the feet, ankles, and legs.

Lymphedema – this causes your body to retain lymphatic fluid and cause swollen feet, aches, and limited range of motion.

Chronic venous insufficiency - due to damaged valves or from standing or sitting for extended periods, causing swollen feet. Blood can collect in the veins of the legs and feet which leads to swelling.

Kidney disease – when the kidneys are not working properly which causes you to retain water and leads to swelling in the feet and ankles.

Swelling with redness and pain may be deep venous thrombus or cellulitis.
